I have very few card collections given my limited resources and space, but I did decide some time ago to begin collecting on-card Royals autographs. It’s been a blast so far trying to track these things down and this is the latest addition to my collection. To view the cards currently in the collection, take a look at the Gallery or the other posts in this series. I’m working on getting a legit want list together on my trade page but, in the meantime, if you have any on-card Royals autos that it looks like I don’t have, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!
A while back I gave an update on some long-lost Topps redemptions that redemptions that I was starting to worry about. I had half a dozen Billy Butlers some Mike Moustakases awaiting the ole’ pen-to-paper and it was really bugging me because both those dudes had live autos in products released later than the products on which I was waiting for redemptions on. The nerve!
Well, it looks like they finally roped Billy Butler into signing some stuff for them, but unfortunately for me, it’s pen-to-gaudy-sticker. To be fair, I was worried this might happen. The release-date-live cards in the Acclaimed Impressions series of relic/autos from 2011 Topps Marquee were all stickers (and most of them were numbered to 600 something) so I really had no right to expect anything different here. I thought, though, that perhaps since they were redemptions maybe Topps would do me a solid and just have the dude sign the card while signing my other stuff that I expected to be on-card. I mean, why not? Surely, the relics were already cut, the card printed… just have the guy sign them instead of stickers. O, the naivety of youth.
Incidentally, there are 2- and 3-relic versions of this card and I tried my hand at one of each (actually, 2 of the dual relic on accident, as seen below).
I’m not really big on relics and, honestly, little unrecognizable patches like these don’t do much for me either. It’s pretty cool trying to guess what part of the Royals logo I have here, but unless it’s instantly recognizable, I just can’t get super stoked about it. The good news on both counts here is that they’re numbered MUCH lower than I expected and they’ve both got patches. So when I put these puppies on eBay (or, better yet, when you trade me for them!), I imagine I’ll easily get my money back from my gamble on them being on-card. Plus, they used a super slightly different photo on both the dual and the triple so it’ll kind of like a flipbook. Bonus buy!
So if anyone’s interested in some sweet Billys, I’ve got three I don’t need. I guess this completes the almost utter suckitude of Topps Marquee. More like Topps B-movie, amirite?! Ugh. Sorry about that.
