I have very few card collections given my limited resources and space, but I did decide some time ago to begin collecting on-card Royals autographs. It’s been a blast so far trying to track these things down and this is the latest addition to my collection. To view the cards currently in the collection, take a look at the Gallery or the other posts in this series. I’m working on getting a legit want list together on my trade page but, in the meantime, if you have any on-card Royals autos that it looks like I don’t have, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!
How do we love Masterpieces? Let Jon count the ways. I love Masterpieces almost as much as I love Masterpeices. Every time I look at this pathetic scrawl, my lone auto from the 2007 Masterpie/eices auto set (I’ve got the 2008 Luke Hochevar as well), my eyes want to go straight to the misspelling. But they don’t. They go straight to the awful signature. Billy Butler has him a hit-or-miss autograph. Some look decent but most, like this one here, look like an 8 year old scribbled it with his non-writing hand. Too bad, because this card would be pretty amazing otherwise. I’m also infinitely glad that the crazy frame parallels from this base set didn’t translate to the autographs. I’d probably stab someone until the streets ran red with Crimson Cardamom blood.
At any rate, as any card blogger worth his blogroll will tell you, Joe Collector is the man to talk to about Masterpieces. I think he’s opened about 12% of the total print run of the stuff. I hope he does 2008 Stadium Club next so I can grab 200 card lots of that junk from him on eBay for my Stadium Club collection. Oh man a I dreading that set. This is my second BB auto (after the-even-worse-signatured and much-sillier-designed 2007 Sweet Spot manuhelmet) but I assure you there will be more to come. He’s basically the only Royal that Topps deigns to admit into their autographed world. Of course, he’s kind of the only consistently good player on the team anymore so I guess that makes sense.
