Upper Deck Community Break Box #6: 2006 Upper Deck First Pitch

We’re getting near the end of the line.  If you’re getting worried about your card count, here’s another choice designed to boost your numbers a little bit.  There won’t be any crazy surprises, unless we hit one of those elusive autographs, but it will have plenty of inserts and cards you probably didn’t already have.

Ah, the markings of a retail box. I believe the that's the only way this stuff was released.

It’s worth mentioning each and every time, all of these boxes are courtesy of our good friends and Community Break Sponsor: BASEBALL CARD EXCHANGE

Whether it was a box that retailed for $.99/pack or $99/pack, BBCE has it now for cheap

This one had to be split up into two videos.  The camera just couldn’t handle all the cardboard.

Okay, that’s not true. The battery couldn’t handle all my long-winded yammering.  After the recharge, we get right back to it.

What?  You don’t want to watch two videos?  Not even press play and them run in the background with your speakers off?  Fine…then on to the scans.

So many distant memories

I like the look of the First Pitch cards.  As I say in the video, it’s nice to see a budget price with an original design.  Upper Deck had it’s “First Edition” budget parallel to rival Topps’ “Opening Day,” but this is all new.

These are the only three types of inserts you can find.

If I would change anything, it would be the insert configuration.  First off, I’d like a couple more insert sets.  Second, I would make a couple of them rarer.  These seem to be pretty equally distributed.

We got 14 Diamond stars, 8 Hot Stove Headlines, and 14 Goin’ Deep.  Looking at the card numbers on the back, I’d say that’s proportionate to the number of cards in each set.

And I know foil or other flashy substances don’t usually equate to “budget” but it would be cool to see a little bit of flair on the fireworks or the stars in the circle.

Last observation: In a world of card companies bitching about “firsties” (especially on twitter), I’m surprised UD didn’t pull out their Hot Stove Headlines when Topps announced their Update Blockbusters insert.

Again, no hits this time around, but the last two boxes have 3 each, so there’s still plenty to go around. Stay tuned. I may actually get it all posted by Saturday after all!
