I have very few card collections given my limited resources and space, but I did decide some time ago to begin collecting on-card Royals autographs. It’s been a blast so far trying to track these things down and this is the latest addition to my collection. I’m working on getting a legit want list together on my trade page but, in the meantime, if you have any on-card Royals autos that it looks like I don’t have, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!
Enshrined as a Royal?
Every now and then you see a card of a guy and think, “He was a [insert team name here]?!”
Let me give you some examples.
“Willie McGee was a Giant?!”
“Will Clark was an Oriole?!”
“Ramon Martinez was a Major Leaguer?!”

But anyway, Al Hrabosky is a name with which I’m not particularly familiar. As a reliever during a period I know very little about (he played from 1970 until right around the time I was born), I missed his cards altogether- my card knowledge extends only as far back as the Sandberg, Boggs and Gwynn trifecta of ’87. I did know his nickname “The Mad Hungarian” though, so I guess some of his legacy outlived his cards.
What I do know of him I know of him in a Cardinals hat. Al was only a Royal for two seasons toward the end of his career (which he finished out with the Braves)- he’s far better-known as a Cardinal. So there’s no reason I can think of to have chosen his Royals uniform for this card. I bet some Cardinals fans raged in their card journals (or whatever people had in 2004 before blogging took off) about how he’s in the wrong uniform. I’m happy enough, though, as it gives me a Royal from 2004 Topps Retired that I can actually afford. I won’t be adding the Bo Jackson or George Brett anytime soon and Dan Quisenberry wasn’t around to sign for this set, so I guess it’s just me an Al for now. Maybe I’ll write a sitcom.
