2011 Bowman Platinum Royals Wrapup

I have very few card collections given my limited resources and space, but I did decide some time ago to begin collecting on-card Royals autographs. It’s been a blast so far trying to track these things down and this is the latest addition to my collection. To view the cards currently in the collection, take a look at the Gallery or the other posts in this series. I’m working on getting a legit want list together on my trade page but, in the meantime, if you have any on-card Royals autos that it looks like I don’t have, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!

Hot on the heels of my epic(ally late) 2011 Bowman Royals On-Card Auto Wrapup, comes my similarly epic(ally tiny) Bowman Platinum On-Card Auto Wrapup!

One measly auto?

Done! Well, that was easy!

I pulled the lone Royal on-card auto subject (in only his base “refractor” version, of course) in our 2011 Bowman Platinum case break. Since we’re all legit and stuff, I had to buy it from ourselves at a reasonable price. I’m on the lookout for the green (/399), blue (/99) and gold (/50) versions but I can’t seem to tell how many the reds are numbered to. If it’s more than 50, I’ll be looking for it. Anyone know if the retail only purples have auto versions? I assume not because who cares.

This is the first I’ve heard of Royals prospect Clint Robinson. That may be because he was drafted in the 25th round of the 2007 draft (13rounds behind fellow Storm Chaser David Lough). Or it may be because this year is his first in AAA, where people really start to take notice of a not-overhyped prospect. Or it may be because he’s been playing behind superprospect Eric Hosmer at 1B (with some time at DH and in the oufield). The Royals minor league system is notoriously stacked. And with highly touted prospects like Wil Myers, Johnny Giavotella, and the aforementioned Eric Hosmer seemingly ahead of Robinson in the major league mix at his positions (with two of those guys there now), Robinson might be easy to write off as an afterthought or second string type guy.

But his numbers belie a steadily improving ballplayer. His OPS rocketed to above 1.000 at AA and he’s hitting well at AAA this year with 19 home runs in about 500 PAs. I figure he’ll repeat AAA next year and end up in the majors in 2013 if he can improve upon his AAA numbers or even maintain them. The Royals outfield could be crowded by then, so Clint’s future may be with another team. But it just goes to show that not only the top draft picks pan out (as if we needed another lesson there).
