I have very few card collections given my limited resources and space, but I did decide some time ago to begin collecting on-card Royals autographs. It’s been a blast so far trying to track these things down and this is the latest addition to my collection. To view the cards currently in the collection, take a look at the Gallery or the other posts in this series. I’m working on getting a legit want list together on my trade page but, in the meantime, if you have any on-card Royals autos that it looks like I don’t have, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!
The way this silly card scans, it almost looks like there’s not an absurdly large and shapely plastic monstrosity of a plastic helmet buried in this card. I don’t know which way I prefer it.
This is the second one of these things I have. In fact, in a strange roundabout way, the other one in my collection (winnings from the sweet Olympics contest at the now-less active JDs Wild Cardz) played a big part in the genesis of my Royals on-card auto collection. If the auto from that break had been and on-card Evan Longoria auto instead of Alex Gordon, I’d be collecting Rays autos. No joke! But still, there’s no denying that these things are pretty laughable. Manupatch? Meh. Manuhelmet? Ridiculous.
Sadly, that’s not the thing that bothers me most about this card. I mean, at least they got the auto on-card and that plays in Peoria, as it were. But that signature is easily the worst Butler signature I’ve ever seen. Probably because it’s on the corner of the card, relegated to a small swath that’s also raised about 3/4″ above the table, but also maybe because he was laughing at the idea of this card. Okay, enough making fun of the helmet (think I can get one of those filled with ice cream LOL!!1), let’s focus on the signature. It’s willy nilly, for one. And it’s weak-Sharpied for two. I’ve seen several copies of this pop up and this is one of the wrost. Plus, the damn thing is so thick that no toploader can hold it. I received this one snawiched between two toploaders and it didn’t weather to trip well. I think it needs its own 30- or 50-card snap case (no relation to hardcore band Snapcase) to hold its mighty manufactured-ness. Regardless, this one’s got some chipping. I’m tempted to upgrade but I feel like I’ll have a similar problem with most of them I would get from eBay. If I see one decently-priced at a show, I’ll make the leap but I’ll probably avoid having another one of these shipped.
I’m not a Sweet Spot guy- the only cards I own are ones I’ve one in contests on blogs here. Does anyone know if this concept existed before or after 2007? I’m curious to know how people reacted at the time since I wasn’t collecting then.
